BoldBellowsA result isn't the same thing as an answer key

Stop letting Gravity Forms quiz results leak full answers into Discord

A generic connector tends to post whatever the entry contains, which for a quiz means respondent text, personal fields and the entry's own ID landing in a public channel. We reduce a completed quiz to its approved result band first, strip anything that could double as a notification exploit, and only then let it post.

From $255, paid once.
No monthly connector fee.

  • Respondent answers never leave WordPress
  • The entry ID itself never appears in the channel
  • Score Relay is usually testable inside a week
Gravity Forms to Discord automation by BoldBellows: a quiz-score reveal that publishes only the approved result band while keeping Gravity Forms answers and personal data private
Band posted, answers held Nothing personal leaves WordPress QUIZZES · THIS WEEK Quizzes completed31 Bands posted31 Answer leaks0 The community only ever sees a band

What a quiz entry clears before anything reaches the channel

  • Only the recorded score decides the bandnever respondent-entered text
  • The public reference is unguessablethe raw entry ID stays internal
  • Mentions and markdown get neutralized firsta post can't be turned into a ping
  • The Gravity Forms plugin folder stays untouchedby design, always
  • A boundary score goes to a moderatornever posted on a guess

01The full-entry-leak trap

A quiz result isn't the whole entry

A generic connector usually just forwards whatever an entry contains to a Discord webhook, field by field. For a scored quiz, that means respondent names, freeform answers and the entry's own identifying number can all end up sitting in a public channel with the score.

"Someone's freeform answer showed up right next to their score in the channel."

The connector forwarded every field on the entry, not just the parts that were actually meant to be seen by the community.

"A respondent typed an @-mention into a text field and it pinged the whole server."

Nothing had sanitized the text before it reached Discord, so ordinary formatting characters behaved like live notification syntax.

"A score sitting right on the line between two bands just got posted as whichever one looked close enough."

Nothing flagged the ambiguous case for a person to confirm, so a borderline result went out without anyone actually checking it.

A public channel should only ever see the outcome, never the working. Forwarding a whole entry to Discord treats a private assessment like it was already meant to be public.

Same quiz, same scores. The difference is whether the channel only ever sees a band, or ends up holding the entry's raw contents.

Before

Post contents Post: full entry, fields untouched Reference: raw entry ID
  • Respondent text posts alongside the score
  • Mentions and formatting pass straight through
  • A boundary score just gets posted, unchecked

After

Entry: 8466 Band: Gold Tier ✓ Only the approved band appears publicly ✓ Mentions and markdown neutralized first ○ A boundary score held for a moderator
  • The channel only ever sees an outcome
  • No text in the post can act as live syntax
  • A close call waits on a person, not a guess

02How it works

How a raw score becomes a safe public post

The quiz result gets read straight from the recorded score first, that score maps to one of your approved bands second, any text destined for the embed gets sanitized third, and the post only goes out once every one of those steps has cleared.

A boundary score routes to review here STEP 1Score read Taken from the recordedresult, never respondent text STEP 2Band mapped Score converts into oneof your approved public bands STEP 3Text sanitized Mentions and markdownneutralized before the embed builds STEP 4Post sent Only once everysafety check has cleared STEP 1Score read From the recorded result STEP 2Band mapped Into an approved band STEP 3Text sanitized Mentions neutralized STEP 4Post sent Every check cleared first A boundary score routes to review here
Nothing goes out unreduced. A public post only ever carries a band, never the work behind it.

Details that matter for a quiz result specifically

  • A Quiz Add-On result or a calculated score field is not the same as a respondent's typed answer. The band mapper reads only the former, so nothing entered as free text ever influences what posts.
  • Discord treats certain characters as live notification syntax, not literal text. Anything drawn from an entry has to be neutralized deliberately, or a respondent's input can behave like a command.
  • A band boundary is a judgment call your team should make, not an algorithm. A score sitting right on the edge routes to a moderator instead of defaulting to whichever side looks closer.

03What powers the reveal

What each post carries, and how privacy stays intact

The score source and band mapper ship with Score Relay. The privacy-safe embed and mention sanitizer join at Private Review. A moderator exception route and message reconciliation complete the model at Community Results.

Message reconciliation Community Results

Links the entry's reference back to the exact accepted Discord message.

We watch real quiz traffic closely against your bands for a full month.

PROGRAM HEALTH Correctly banded posts, this month Personal fields leaked into a post, ever Open count 0
Community Results adds this view: correctly banded posts climbing steadily while leaked personal fields stay flat at zero.

04Who it's for

Built for communities that actually run scored quizzes

Course community managers announcing cohort results, competition moderators handling disputed scores, training coordinators tracking completion, and Discord administrators who need posting to stay predictable at scale.

Course community manager

Announces cohort quiz results and needs every post to stay strictly within what's meant to be public.

Competition moderator

Handles disputed scores and needs a boundary case routed for review, not auto-posted.

Training coordinator

Tracks completion across cohorts and needs a repair process that never posts the same result twice.

Discord administrator

Wants message and channel permissions respected without babysitting every quiz result personally.

05Compare

Where a field-forwarding webhook actually falls apart

Wiring a webhook to post whenever an entry saves takes minutes. Making sure that post never carries more than a community was ever meant to see is where most setups stop trying.

Comparing a raw webhook post against the BoldBellows band-reveal build across four questions
What to weighPosting the raw entryA plain webhookBoldBellows build
What triggers a postWhoever's watching notices the entryEntry creation, quiz or notYesA completed quiz with a real recorded score
What the channel seesWhatever fields someone remembers to hideEvery mapped field, no filteringYesThe approved band, nothing else

The exact-boundary trap

A score lands precisely on the line separating two public bands. The privacy-safe embed holds that specific result rather than guessing which band it belongs in, giving a moderator the deciding vote.

The formatting-injection trap

Respondent text carries a mention or markdown that could alter how the post renders. Message reconciliation isolates that condition before Discord ever receives text capable of acting on the channel.

How should the Discord post fire?Required

Background processing protects visitor response time; hybrid adds a reconciliation sweep on top.

How should a Discord post trace back to its entry?Required

Conflict review adds a queue for a match the rule can't confidently resolve on its own.

What happens when the Discord feed fails?Required

Creating operator work takes more setup than a stop, but nothing silently falls through.

How soon do you need it live?Required

Standard follows the schedule your other choices set. Pay to move up the queue and go live sooner.

Each one begins switched off. Turn on what your rollout needs, watch the total, switch it back off.

06The process

Getting your bands and your sanitizer right before launch

Score Relay is the smallest build here, and it's usually ready to test within a week once your bands are defined. Private Review's embed and sanitizer need a bit more back-and-forth to match your channel's actual formatting quirks. Community Results, once proven against real disputed and boundary scores, tends to run closer to twelve days. Have an event date locked in? Mention it early, since a faster speed choice can pull the schedule in.

Your privacy worksheet Exactly where each band boundary sits Which fields must never appear publicly Who reviews a held or disputed score Which Gravity Forms add-ons are actually in play Built from your real quiz structure Build summary Test set: 24 entries run Entries processed 24 Bands posted 22 Personal-field leaks 0 Ready for handoff
  1. Map the quiz and its scoring

We look at how the Quiz Add-On or your calculated field actually produces a score on your live form, end to end.

  2. Set the bands and the privacy line

You define each public band's boundaries and exactly which fields are never allowed to leave WordPress.

  3. Build the reveal pipeline

The score source, the band mapper and the sanitizer get wired together against your actual quiz structure.

  4. Attack it deliberately

A mention buried in a text field, an exact-boundary score and a rejected Discord permission all get thrown at it before anything ships.

  5. Verify live posts and hand off

We confirm real quiz completions post correctly, then walk your moderators through the operating record.

Three things to have ready

  • A way in — full site access, or a staging environment that mirrors it.
  • Your actual band boundaries, written out in advance.
  • Permission to add a webhook to the target Discord channel.

07Security and ownership

Sees the score, never the surrounding form.

This build only ever handles the quiz entries feeding your Discord channel. It has no path into other content, themes, users, other plugins or billing settings anywhere on the site.

Ships as its own plugin, never a core edit

The reveal pipeline is entirely self-contained, hooking into documented Gravity Forms events, so a core update simply passes it by untouched.

A dedicated role, kept apart from admin access

The reveal logic operates under a capability scoped to exactly this job wherever Gravity Forms lets that be configured.

Nothing leaves WordPress except the band

Every field not explicitly approved for public view stays behind, regardless of what the quiz entry actually contains.

A retry updates the same post, never a second one

The public reference key ties every write back to its entry, so repairing a failed post can't accidentally duplicate it.

Internal logs stay internal, always

What we keep for troubleshooting is the band and the outcome, never a second copy of what a respondent actually wrote.

Full ownership transfers when we're done

The plugin, the band logic and the documentation describing it all belong to you outright, held back by nothing.

09FAQ

Questions about bands, privacy and moderation

Still unsure? We reply in plain English.

Isn't a Discord webhook already a five-minute job in Zapier?

For a plain notification with nothing sensitive in it, yes. The moment personal answers and a public channel are both in the picture, deciding what's safe to post is logic a single trigger step was never built to handle.

Do you ever edit Gravity Forms' own files to make this run?

No, that's not how it's built. The whole pipeline lives in a plugin of its own, working through documented hooks and endpoints, so a Gravity Forms update simply has nothing of ours in its path.

We ran quizzes before this was set up. Can those results get posted retroactively?

Yes. A backfill pages through those older entries up to a cutoff date and runs each one through the exact same band mapping and sanitizing rules a live completion would follow.

Is there anything billed monthly beyond what we pay you?

No. What you pay us is a single implementation fee. Your Gravity Forms license, your Discord server and your hosting all continue being billed separately, exactly as they already are.

Gravity Forms or Discord shipped an update. Could that quietly break the band logic?

The documentation we leave you names every hook, endpoint and field this build touches. When an update moves one of them, you get a visible, specific failure to act on instead of a post that just quietly stops working.

Our quiz has conditional pages that change which questions count toward the score. Does that still work?

It does, as long as the score itself comes from a field or a Quiz Add-On result rather than being reconstructed from which pages were shown. We test entries that take different conditional routes specifically to confirm this. If you searched for gravity forms to discord, gravity forms entries discord notification and gravity forms discord integration, this is the service that delivers it.
