BoldBellowsSquarespace audience-building, automated

Squarespace to Mailchimp, tagged the moment someone signs up

Our Squarespace to Mailchimp service reads customers, form leads and newsletter signups through a read-only API key and drops each one into Mailchimp already tagged for what they actually did, so your welcome flows, segments and campaigns work from day one instead of a flat, untagged list.

Chapter 01The tagging gap

Every new email address arrives untagged, and stays that way

Squarespace doesn't push anything to Mailchimp on its own. Without a sync, a buyer, a form lead and a footer newsletter signup all arrive in your audience looking identical, which means every automation you built to treat them differently just doesn't fire.

I built a beautiful welcome series for new customers. Turns out it was firing for everyone, including people who'd never bought anything.

Roughly how every untagged Mailchimp audience eventually gets discovered

Manual CSV exports

Exporting a customer list and uploading it to Mailchimp by hand works once, then quietly stops happening after the third week.

Flat, untagged lists

Every automation that depends on a tag, welcome series, win-back, VIP treatment, stays dormant if nothing ever applies the tag.

Duplicate contacts

The same person shows up twice, once from a form and once from a purchase, splitting their engagement history in two.

Before

  • A flat list where every contact looks identical
  • Welcome and win-back flows that never actually trigger
  • The same person showing up under two different entries
  • A manual export that stops happening after week three

After

  • Every contact tagged the moment they enter the audience
  • Automations that finally fire for the right people
  • One record per person, merged rather than duplicated
  • A sync that keeps running long after week three

Chapter 02How it works

Getting Squarespace signups into Mailchimp, step by step

Two systems, one path between them. Squarespace keeps running exactly as it does today. We watch for new customers, leads and signups, decide the right tag, and write the contact in.

Your Squarespace site Customers, form leads, newsletter signups Read-only access The sync we build Decides the tag, checks for a duplicate, writes in Tagged contacts Your Mailchimp audience Tagged, deduplicated, ready for your flows Your site Customers, leads, signups Read-only access The sync we build Tags, dedupes, writes in Tagged contacts Your Mailchimp Ready for your flows and segments
Fig. 3. Contacts flow one direction only: from Squarespace's signup sources into Mailchimp.

Squarespace: read, never write

The key we issue can see customers, forms and signups. Nothing about a page, a product or a setting is reachable through it.

Tag logic decided up front

Which tag a contact gets is set during your brief, not guessed on the fly, so it stays predictable as your subscriber count grows.

Your audience: merged, not doubled

A returning email address updates the existing contact's tags rather than creating a second entry that splits their history.

Chapter 03The audience

What lands in Mailchimp, and the tags it applies

A contact never arrives without context. Your package sets the ceiling on how many tags apply, and none of that mapping is locked once you're in your rounds of changes.

Chapter 04Who this fits

Built for the people who send the campaigns

Recognize any of this from your own audience? A properly tagged sync is what makes the flows you already designed start working.

Founders and owners

Send a customer-only promotion without wondering whether it accidentally reached people who've never bought anything.

Marketers and freelancers

Build the welcome series and win-back flow once, and trust that the tags triggering them stay accurate.

Product-based sellers

Product-category tags mean a launch email reaches people who've actually bought in that category before.

Service and coaching sites

Leads from a contact form get a separate lead-nurture sequence, instead of the same offer sent to existing clients.

Chapter 05The options

Where the shortcuts for reaching Mailchimp start to break down

Every option below can add a contact to Mailchimp. The gap shows up the moment a campaign needs to reach one segment and skip another.

Manual export, Zapier or Make, a generic connector app and a BoldBellows build, compared for getting contacts into Mailchimp
Question Manual export Zapier or Make Generic connector app BoldBellows build
Tags by source automatically Whatever tag you remember to add by hand Possible, one Zap per source Usually one tag for everyone Yes, tagged by source and behavior
Prevents duplicate contacts Easy to re-upload the same address twice Only as reliable as the Zap's own logic Usually, within its own scope Merged on email address, every time
Full contact history Whatever you happen to export Only new signups going forward Sometimes, on a higher tier Backfilled from day one
Cost as your list grows Free, but easy to forget Every new signup spends another task Around $15 to $50 a month, on top of Mailchimp One-off price from $375
Where it lives Your own Mailchimp account Nominally yours, but their platform runs it Whatever that app decides to support Your Mailchimp account, keys you control

Why a single blanket tag rarely helps. Most connector apps add every contact to Mailchimp the same way, regardless of whether they bought, filled out a form, or just joined the newsletter. Automations built on tags stay silent until that distinction actually exists.

InterludeFlows that actually fire

You built the automations. Now give them contacts that are tagged to match

Walk through your sources and tagging preferences on the pricing configurator, and a firm price with a realistic timeline appears on screen. Most projects wrap inside two weeks; paying to skip the queue shortens that further.

Pricing

Build your Squarespace to Mailchimp price

Pick a package, answer three short questions about your sources, your tags and how often the list should refresh, and your price and go-live date move as you choose.

Choose your packageRequired

The three packages differ by how many signup sources feed Mailchimp and how granular the tagging gets.

Every Commerce customer lands in Mailchimp, tagged as a buyer, deduplicated and current.

  • Commerce customers synced into your Mailchimp audience
  • A buyer tag applied automatically on first purchase
  • De-duplication on email address, so no contact doubles up
  • A scheduled re-check on real cron that catches anything the last pull missed
  • Your own read-only Squarespace API key, never a shared public app
  • Handover notes (PDF) covering every tag and refresh rule
  • Two rounds of changes once you see real contacts land

Customers, form leads and newsletter signups each tagged for what they actually did.

  • Everything in the Customer Sync package
  • Forms submissions synced with a lead tag and the source form noted
  • Newsletter-only signups kept separate from customers and leads
  • Purchase history synced as merge fields for segmentation inside Mailchimp
  • Full contact history brought in from day one, not just new signups
  • Handover notes (PDF) covering the full tag map
  • Three rounds of changes once it is running

The full picture: purchase behavior tagged for the automations you already built in Mailchimp.

  • Everything in the Full Funnel Tagging package
  • Repeat-purchase and first-purchase tags kept current as orders come in
  • Product-category tags for anyone who's bought a specific product line
  • Unsubscribe and bounce status read back so lists stay clean both ways
  • Near-instant refresh so a new subscriber reaches Mailchimp within minutes
  • Handover notes (PDF) covering every tag, merge field and refresh rule
  • Four rounds of changes once it is running

Several Squarespace sites feeding one audience, a multi-brand tagging scheme, or a segmentation model none of the packages above name. Tell us how you market and we will price it for your build.

Which Squarespace sources should feed Mailchimp?Required

Each source you add is another signal Mailchimp can segment and automate against.

How granular should the tagging be?Required

A simple buyer/lead split works for many sites; product-level tags suit a catalog with distinct customer groups.

How often should Mailchimp refresh?Required

Squarespace's API is read on a schedule rather than pushed by webhook, so this sets how often we call back for new contacts.

How soon do you need it live?Required

Standard follows the schedule your other choices set. Pay to move up the queue and go live sooner.

Optional extrasOptional

Each one begins switched off. Turn on what your marketing needs, watch the total, switch it back off.

Chapter 06The process

Turning a tagging plan into an audience that runs on autopilot

Six stages take the build from a conversation to something running quietly in the background. Your side of it comes to about half an hour, mostly a short brief at the start; from there, it's on us.

  1. About 15 minutes

Brief: how do you want people tagged?

Tell us which sources matter and how you'd like buyers, leads and subscribers treated differently. We turn that into a tag map.

  2. About 10 minutes

You share two sets of credentials

A read-only Squarespace key and a Mailchimp API key scoped to one audience. Both are set up following a walkthrough built for non-developers.

  3. Most of the project

The tag logic gets built and tested

Every source you chose gets wired to its tag, checked against real signups, and set on the refresh schedule you picked.

  4. Before you see it

    Test contacts run through first

We push a handful of test signups through the whole pipeline and confirm the right tags land before anything real does.

  5. Two to four rounds

You watch it live, we tune it

A few days of real contacts landing gives you a chance to flag anything off, tag names, merge fields, timing, before it's locked in.

  6. Handover day

    Handed over, still running

A PDF walks through every tag and rule, and the sync itself keeps tagging new contacts long after we've stepped back.

What this needs from you: about half an hour, spread over the project

  • Enough Squarespace access to generate a read-only API key
  • Admin rights on the Mailchimp audience you want contacts landing in
  • A rough idea of which tags matter for the campaigns you already run
  • A couple of real subscribers you can point to if a tag looks wrong

Chapter 07Trust

Two keys, both scoped tight, both revocable by you

A customer list is one of the most sensitive things your business holds. Both sides of this sync are built to touch as little as necessary and to be shut off in seconds if you ever want that.

ContactTag a.reyes@···Buyer j.ortiz@···Lead m.diaz@···Newsletter l.kim@···Buyer Read-only

Squarespace side: view-only

The Squarespace key can be read, not written to. It can't publish a page, change a product, or edit a setting on your behalf.

One audience, nothing wider

The Mailchimp key is scoped to the single audience you name; it has no reach into any other list on your account.

Named access, not shared logins

Everyone we bring in on the project is added under their own name; nobody works from a login meant for someone else.

Both keys, revoked in seconds

Pull either key from its own dashboard and the sync stops that instant; there's nothing further you need to do.

Nothing archived on our end

A contact is read, tagged and written to Mailchimp in one pass; we don't keep a separate copy of your list.

No recurring fee from us

The tagging logic runs against your own Mailchimp account; whatever you pay Mailchimp itself is between you and them.

"A customer list took years to build. The least we can do is treat access to it like it matters."

Chapter 09Questions

Squarespace to Mailchimp questions, answered

Common questions from people about to start a build. Anything specific to your setup, put it in your quote request and we'll cover it there.

Squarespace has its own Email Campaigns tool. Why sync to Mailchimp at all?

Squarespace's own tool covers basic sending well, but Mailchimp's automation, tagging and reporting go further for a business that wants behavior-based flows rather than one-off sends. This sync makes sure Mailchimp actually knows who each contact is, not just that they exist.

We already have contacts in Mailchimp. Will this create duplicates?

No. Every write checks the email address against your existing audience first, so a contact already there gets its tags updated rather than a second entry created alongside it.

Can leads and customers get genuinely different tags?

Yes, that's the core of the Full Funnel Tagging and Lifecycle Marketing packages. A Commerce order, a Forms submission and a newsletter signup are each detected separately and tagged for what they actually are.

We sell more than one product category. Can tags reflect that?

Yes, the product-category tagging extra applies a tag per category on purchase, so a campaign about one line of products can target only the people who've bought into it.

What happens to contacts who unsubscribe inside Mailchimp?

With the Lifecycle Marketing package, unsubscribe and bounce status get read back from Mailchimp, so a future sync respects that status instead of quietly re-adding someone who opted out.

Can this cover contacts we've had since before the sync existed?

Yes, with the full historical backfill extra. Existing customers and leads get tagged and brought in retroactively, so the audience isn't split between old contacts and new ones.

What if Squarespace or Mailchimp changes something on their end?

A broken run gets caught the same day through the sync health log. With the aftercare package added, any breakage caused by a platform change gets fixed at no extra cost for three months after handover.

Is there a monthly bill on top of what I pay Mailchimp?

No. What you pay us is a one-time build fee. Mailchimp's own plan cost is separate and stays between you and them; we don't add anything recurring on top.

Give your Mailchimp flows the tags they were built to run on

A properly tagged sync turns your existing automations from theoretical to actually firing, checked against your own audience and owned by you outright. Configure a package to see your price now, or write in with the details for a hand-priced quote. If you searched for sync squarespace orders to mailchimp, squarespace mailchimp integration and squarespace mailchimp subscriber sync, this is the service that delivers it.
