One person, two customers
Each system made its own record.
BoldBellowsThinkific to Shopify automation for course businesses that also sell physical products
Thinkific to Shopify automation joins a school and a store that share customers. Shopify's customerSet mutation creates or updates a customer by email, phone or a custom identifier, orderCreate can import an order from outside checkout when the app holds the right scope, and a trial store is limited to five new orders a minute. BoldBellows keeps the user, the course and the enrollment together as one identity, answers with a 200 inside the five-second window and leaves the real work for afterwards, then matches the learner to the customer first, adds course tags and a metafield without removing the merchant's own, and creates an order only for an item that ships.

Chapter 01 the two-customer-lists problem
A learner buys the course in Thinkific and the workbook kit in Shopify, and the two systems hold them as strangers. The store's marketing sends a first-purchase discount to someone who has been a student for a year, the school cannot see who owns the kit, and a sync that rewrites tags wipes out the VIP label the merchant added by hand. A tracking number goes out for an order that was only a digital course.
The learner bought the course and the kit, and the store had them as two strangers.
Each system made its own record.
The store did not know the course.
The sync replaced the whole tag list.

Chapter 02 How it works
Nothing is written until the change is judged and the customer has been looked for.
Each Thinkific event is verified and logged; anything outside the agreed scope is set aside with a reason.
The webhook is verified, the customer is matched by email or phone, and a rule decides the tags and whether the item ships.
The customer is upserted, tags and a metafield are added without replacing existing ones, and an order is created only for a physical item.
Chapter 03 What ships in the build
Launch is the front door. Route is the workshop. Govern is the inspection that keeps the route honest.
Reads the Thinkific record and confirms it satisfies the trigger before Shopify is touched.
Pairs every Thinkific record with its Shopify counterpart in a ledger you can read.
Holds the agreed Thinkific-to-Shopify field map as a versioned contract, not a habit.
Upserts the customer and adds course tags and a metafield without removing existing ones.
Separates new, changed and already handled records through the customer's email matched through customerSet, with the Thinkific user ID held in a metafield.
Decides from the product whether an event creates an order, only a tag, or nothing.
Runs a regular comparison between both sides and keeps the mismatches in view, on the Thinkific to Shopify route.
Catches a revoked scope or a changed metafield definition before writes start to fail.
Shows which exceptions are getting old and who has to act on them.

Chapter 04 Who this fits
Learners enroll in Thinkific. Physical kits sell in Shopify.
"One customer, not two."
The learner is matched to the store customer by email, so the record is shared.
"Do not send a first-order offer to a student."
Course tags let the store see who already studies with you.
"Leave my tags alone."
Tags are added, never replaced, and existing metafields stay as they are.
"Only ship what ships."
An order is created only for a physical kit, with the course noted.
"Each client has a store."
A school's customers and orders stay inside its own client's Shopify store.
"I want the kit and the course in one place."
The customer record shows both.
Chapter 05 The options
Each can create a customer. Only one matches first and protects what the merchant set.
| Question | a manual customer import | A template zap for Shopify | BoldBellows build: match-first commerce route |
|---|---|---|---|
| What starts the work | A team member checks Thinkific | Any event the zap listens to | A Thinkific event that matches your trigger definition |
| How identity is decided | Searched by name or address | Whatever field is mapped first | Email match plus the Thinkific user ID in a metafield |
| What reaches Shopify | The parts someone thought of | Fields forwarded unchecked | One customer across both, tags added, orders only for kits |
| After an uncertain result | It waits until somebody notices | Stops with an error email | Reads Shopify by the customer's email matched through customerSet, with the Thinkific user ID held in a metafield before any rewrite |
A delayed Thinkific event is compared with what Shopify already holds and is set aside if it would undo something newer.
The customer is matched, the course tag is added beside the VIP tag, and nothing the merchant set is removed. The customer's email matched through customerSet, with the Thinkific user ID held in a metafield turns the question into a lookup, and the answer is one of four: nothing, right, wrong or unclear. Everything else is an update, a no-op or a case for a person.
Before fields or branches are discussed, the customer's email matched through customerSet, with the Thinkific user ID held in a metafield is fixed, because every later decision reads from it.

Chapter 06 The process
Six stages, one owner on your side, and a written output at the end of each.
About 30 minutes
We decide which Thinkific enrollments and orders touch a customer, which also create an order and which are left alone.
Access review
Together we approve what the route may read in Thinkific and where it may write in Shopify.
Most of the project
Tag names, metafield definitions, the shipping rule and the exact Shopify scopes are approved before anything is written.
Before you review
For Thinkific to Shopify, every failure we can think of is tried against a test Shopify, and the ones that matter become written repair steps.
Handover day
We switch the route on at a checkpoint you approve and leave you with written notes on how it works.
About 30 minutes
A review at the end of the first month covers volume, exceptions, retries and anything that drifted.
Chapter 07 Turnaround
The clock starts once Thinkific and Shopify access are approved.
6 to 10 business days
10 to 16 business days
16 to 24 business days
Chapter 08 Getting started
Chapter 09 Trust
Only agreed Thinkific data leaves, and it goes to one named place in Shopify.
We work with the supported connection points of Thinkific and Shopify and leave the products exactly as you run them today.
Scopes are reviewed with you before launch and again at handover.
Each Thinkific field sent to Shopify has a stated purpose. Sensitive values are excluded or masked before anything is written.
An unclear write is settled by finding the customer and comparing it with the intended values, not by sending again.
Logs hold identifiers, times and error types, not your customer content.
Handover includes the rules, the owners and the repair steps in one PDF.
"A store and a school share customers, so the build matches the learner to the customer first and writes only what each enrollment proves."

Chapter 11 Questions
A handful of honest answers before you spend anything.
A simple connector can give you one customer record across the school and the store. It will not match a learner to the customer already in the store, create an order only when something ships or keep the merchant's own tags safe. These are the parts the build adds.
The route matches by email, or phone, before it writes, and stores the Thinkific user ID in a metafield. A second course or a repeated webhook updates the customer it already found.
No. Course tags are added to the existing list, and metafields are only set where you define them, so what the merchant added by hand stays.
Only for an item that ships, such as a workbook kit. A course purchase alone makes a customer update, not an order, so nothing is fulfilled that does not exist.
Only the scopes you approve, such as write_customers, and write_orders if kits are in scope. Customer data is protected in Shopify, so the build follows its requirements.
Cost-based limits on GraphQL, a maximum single query cost of 1,000 points, input lists of at most 250, and five new orders a minute on a trial store. The route sizes its work to fit.
No. Shopify only receives, and nothing a merchant does in the store touches a learner's enrollment.
Absolutely. Nothing reaches Shopify until the Thinkific Shopify field mapping service has your approval on the page.
Yes. Anything you can state as a rule can become part of a custom Thinkific workflow for Shopify. That includes Thinkific Shopify integration consultant advice, from $990.
You get a list of the interfaces we rely on. When one shifts, the affected records hold and you are told. Later maintenance is quoted on its own. It is also the answer to custom thinkific to shopify automation.
Hand us the trigger and the target, and we return the means to automate Thinkific data to Shopify, with tests and documentation, starting at $990.
